How to Tell If Gold Is Real: Simple Tests You Can Try at Home

Whether you inherited a piece of jewelry or found something in a drawer, it's natural to wonder if it's real gold. Here are a few at-home checks — and why a professional test is still the only way to know for sure.
1. Look for a Karat Stamp
Most real gold jewelry is stamped with its purity, such as 10k, 14k, 18k, or 24k. European pieces sometimes use a numeric stamp instead, like 585 (14k) or 750 (18k). No stamp doesn't automatically mean it's fake, but it's a good first clue.
2. Try the Magnet Test
Gold is not magnetic. If a piece is strongly attracted to a magnet, it likely contains a base metal core. This test can rule out obvious fakes, but gold-plated items can still fail to react if the base metal isn't magnetic either.
3. Check for Discoloration
Look at areas with the most wear, like the underside of a ring. If you see a different color metal peeking through, the piece is likely gold-plated rather than solid gold.
4. The Float Test (Use With Caution)
Real gold is dense and will sink in water rather than float. This test can be misleading with hollow pieces, so treat it as a rough indicator only.
Why Professional Testing Still Matters
At-home tests can point you in the right direction, but they can't tell you karat purity or exact value. Professional gold buyers use acid testing or electronic testers to get a precise, reliable reading.
