What Is a Diamond Certificate?

A certificate, or grading report, is issued by an independent gemological laboratory that examines a diamond and documents its 4Cs — cut, color, clarity, and carat weight — along with measurements and any treatments or characteristics.

GIA vs. IGI

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is widely regarded as the most rigorous and consistent grading lab, commonly used for natural diamonds. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is one of the largest labs globally and is especially prominent in grading lab-grown diamonds. Both are reputable, but grading standards can differ slightly between labs, which is worth keeping in mind when comparing stones from different sources.
